GAUGE UP by Brittany Tyler

Poppins Scarf by Michaela Moores
As a designer, I love to ask the question “what if?” to generate inspiration. What if the sky rained yellow? What if ducks were offended by pomegranates? What if schnauzer kisses had medicinal properties? Sounds silly, I know, but it really does lube the brain cogs responsible for creativity. So the first time I saw the delicate, airy Poppins scarf I wondered, “What if I knit this lace weight scarf in a drastically heavier gauge?” It’s an experiment I’ve been wanting to try ever since we launched “The Movie Issue.” Having recently found a little down time hidden deep within the corners of my busy life, I dusted off a few hours and used them to whip up my new favorite scarf.
Sorry about the poor image quality. I am temporary limited to my cell phone camera.
I used two skeins of Malabrigo Rasta and cut the fringe first so that I could knit until I ran out of yarn. I cast on 20 stitches using US size 19 needles. Really you can make this scarf with any weight yarn, just cast on a multiple of 4 stitches. It came out great in a multi-colored yarn and I bet this design is also conducive to mixing yarns in multi-fiber stripes. Download this free pattern and conduct your own knitting experiment.
