SS11 SNEAK PEEK by Brittany Tyler
Team Tangled affectionately refers to me as the “Visual Multimedia Fairy” because as far as my not so computer savvy business partner is concerned, I must possess magical powers to carry out my Tangled responsibilities. But, I’m afraid that I am only human and as a mere graphic design student, I have been working long hours to bring you new Tangled products and our largest issue of the webzine ever for Sock Summit 2011. For the first time, Tangled will be an exhibitor at Sock Summit and in celebration of all things sockerriffic, we’re launching our special summer issue complete with over 20 original patterns! We’ve also created new Tangled products for the event including t-shirts, bags, buttons, and more. If you’re attending Sock Summit 2011 in July come by booth 213 to check out all of the samples from the special summer issue, browse the groovy products, let knitwear designer Melissa Somerville show you how to make yarn from recycled t-shirts, and even get a Tangled tattoo (that’s right!). Here’s sneak peek of some of the new patterns and products that will be available at Sock Summit and on Tangled soon.

THE TANGLED YARN DIET by Brittany Tyler
I know many of us have utterly shameful yarn stashes. The last time I changed residencies, I filled an embarrassing number of boxes with yarn alone. I spread my stash over several locations in our condo hoping my boyfriend and the world will never fully realize how much yarn I actually have (a strategy I also employ with my shoes). There’s a basket next to my bed, a drawer in the living room, a peg board in the office, color coordinated jars full of remnants all over the house, and there are several large tubs where I imprison my most depressing WIPs under my bed. But I will say, though my supply may have amassed beyond my life expectancy, it is nothing compared to Tracy’s yarn closet. Seriously, if you’ve ever seen one of those infomercials featuring the latest and greatest organizing solution for your messy life that begins with a woman opening a door only to be buried in falling clothes and boxes, then you know what it’s like to experience Tracy’s stash.
But I’m not here to judge – I’m here to help. If you too need to go on a yarn diet, Tangled has some stash-busting project suggestions:
Ever since I designed Lollipop I’ve wanted to make a slouchy version. What makes this pattern a great stash-buster is that you can potentially use a different yarn for every stripe. I estimate that each stripe requires about 30 yards, so even a very small remnant will do. I gathered 7 different remnants in creams and grays of similar weights and switched between them at random to make my new swirly hat.

For this slouchy version of Lollipop, I followed the original pattern except I worked a total of 9 stripes and then lightly blocked the hat body over a large dinner plate before continuing. After blocking, I picked up 138 stitches evenly around the bottom of the hat body for the brim. While working the first row of the ribbed brim, I decreased every third stitch for a total of 92 stitches.
I am very pleased with my new rainy day beret and I’m already dreaming of a scarf to match it.
